About Portuguese school holidays
Unlike many countries, school holidays in Portugal take place at the same time throughout the territory. Their dates change slightly every year and are set by the appropriate order.
The time of study in Portuguese schools is measured in years. The year of study the student is in affects the start and end date of the summer holidays. This applies to those who study in the 9th and 10th year.
School holidays in Portugal 2022-2023
- Summer holidays 2022: from July 1 (Friday) to September 13-16 (Tuesday – Friday) *;
- Christmas holidays 2022-2023: from December 19 (Monday) 2022 to January 2 (Monday) 2023;
- Carnival holidays: from 20 (Monday) to 22 (Wednesday) February 2023;
- Easter holidays: from 3 (Monday) to 14 (Friday) April 2023;
- Summer holidays 2023 for students of the 1st cycle (Escola primária, 1-4 years): from July 1 (Friday) to September 12-15 (Tuesday – Friday)*;
- Summer holidays 2023 for students in years 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10: from June 15 (Thursday) to September 12-15 (Tuesday – Friday)*;
- Summer holidays 2023 for students 9, 11 and 12: from June 8 (Thursday) to September 12-15 (Tuesday – Friday)*.
* The start date of the summer holidays depends on the school and the year of study. Specify it in your educational institution or on its official website.
IMPORTANT! Pay attention to the start date of the summer holidays for students in the 9th and 10th year. There is no typo here, everything is according to Order No. 8356/2022 from the Office of the Minister of Education.
Other weekends for Portuguese schoolchildren in 2022/2023
In addition to ordinary holidays, during the school year, schools will be closed for another 12 days on official public holidays. These are five days in 2022:
- October 5 (Wednesday) – Republic Day;
- November 1 (Tuesday) – All Saints’ Day;
- December 1 (Thursday) – Restoration of Independence Day;
- December 8 (Thursday) – Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary;
- December 25 (Sunday) – Christmas.
And seven holidays in 2023:
- January 1 (Sunday) – New Year;
- April 7 (Friday) – Good Friday;
- April 9 (Sunday) – Easter Sunday;
- April 25 (Tuesday) – Liberation Day;
- May 1 (Monday) – Labor Day;
- June 8 (Thursday) – Corpus Christi (Spirits Day);
- June 10 (Saturday) – Portugal Day (National Day).
