What are the school holidays in Portugal
In Portugal, the school year starts at the beginning of September and ends at the end of June or early July. The General Directorate of Education (Direção-Geral da Educação) sets the exact dates a few months before the start of the new school year. Therefore in this article, we give some indicative dates for school holidays in Portugal in addition to the exact dates.
There are three holiday periods in Portugal in 2022:
- New Year holidays (Christmas, winter holidays);
- Spring holidays;
- Summer holidays.
Until 2021, there were carnival holidays, also called Shrovetide holidays. In 2021 they were abolished because of the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19. In 2022, Carnival holidays were cancelled in Portugal because of the emergence of the Omicron strain. It is not known what will happen in the future.

School holidays and public holidays in Portugal in 2022
In addition to normal holidays, Portuguese schools have holiday weekends. There are a total of seven such days in 2022:
- 25 April 2022 – Portuguese Freedom Day;
- 10 June 2022 – Portugal Day;
- 16 June 2022 – Corpus Christi (Corpus Christi Feast);
- 05 October 2022 – Republic of Portugal Day
- 01 November 2022 – All Saints’ Day
- 01 December 2022 – Portuguese Independence Day
- 08 December 2022 – Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary.
