Features of the study schedule in Finnish schools 2022-2023

According to the law on education, the school year must have 190 days. But in 2022-2023 there are three holidays that fall on weekdays. These days, schoolchildren do not study, but they are counted as educational.

Holidays when schools are closed:

Independence Day – December 6, 2022;
Baptism – January 6, 2023;
Easter – April 7-10, 2023;
Labor Day (Vappu) – May 1, 2023;
Maundy Thursday – May 18, 2023.

IMPORTANT! The Ministry of Education regulates the school year in primary, basic, secondary, vocational schools for children and secondary schools for adults. Vocational schools, upper secondary schools and upper secondary schools for adults can determine the start and end dates of school holidays themselves.

School holidays in Finland 2022-2023 are determined by the Ministry of Education (Opetushallitus). Later in the article we will give the exact dates for the largest cities. The holiday schedule in the Finnish schools of the region usually coincides with the school schedule of its capital. But it may differ due to weather and geographical features. Therefore, check the exact schedule of the academic year in your educational institution.

Approximate vacation dates for Finnish schoolchildren:

Beginning of the academic year: August 9-15;
Autumn holidays: 17-21, 19-21 or 24-28 September;
Christmas holidays: from December 21-23 to January 3-8;
Winter holidays: February 20-24, from February 27 to March 3 or March 6-10;
Summer holidays start on June 4th.
