What are the school holidays in Poland?

The school year in Poland (at school) is divided into two terms. The first starts in September and ends in January. The second lasts from January to June. There are four rest periods:

  • Christmas and New Year’s holidays (Christmas holidays);
  • Winter holidays;
  • Easter holidays;
  • Summer holidays.

The dates for winter (Christmas), Easter and summer holidays are the same throughout the country. The dates of the winter holidays in Poland depend on the voivodeship and are set by decree of the Minister of Education (Minister Edukacji Narodowej).

Public schools in Poland might have different timetables. The school may set the dates for the beginning and end of holidays and study periods.

When does the school year begin and end in Poland?

The official date for the beginning of the school year in Poland is 1 September, and it ends at the end of June (23-25th, depending on the weekend). If 1 September falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the first day of the school year is Monday. Students do not have school on that day and there is a ceremonial meeting.

Fun fact

If September 1 falls on a Friday (as in 2023), it may be moved to Monday, September 4. This date will be considered the beginning of the school year.

National Holidays

There are 12 national holidays in Poland when schools are closed. Nine of them have fixed dates; three are floating holidays (Easter, or Easter Monday and Blood and Body of Christ Day). Here is a list of Polish national holidays with fixed dates:

  • 1 January New Year’s Eve;
  • 6 January Feast of the Three Kings (Epiphany);
  • 1 May Labour Day;
  • 3 May Constitution Day
  • 15 August Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary;
  • 1 November All Saints’ Day
  • 11 November Independence Day
  • 25 December First Day of Christmas;
  • 26 December Second Day of Christmas.

School holidays in Poland 2021-2022

  • Summer holidays 2021: from 25 June to 1 September;
  • Christmas and New Year holidays: from 23 December 2021 to 1 January 2022;
  • Easter Holidays: 14 to 19 April;
  • Summer holidays 2022: from 24 June to 1 September.

Winter holidays in Polish schools 2022:

  • 17-30 January: Wielkopolskie, Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Lubuszkie, Małopolskie, Świętokrzyskie voivodeships.
  • 24 January to 6 February: Warmińsko-Mazurskie, Podlaskie Voivodeships
  • From 31 January to 13 February: West Pomeranian (Zachodniopomorskie), Lower Silesian (Dolnośląskie), Mazowieckie, Opolskie voivodeships.
  • 14-27 February: Lubelskie, Łódzkie, Podkarpackie, Pomeranian, Silesian (Śląskie) voivodships.

Floating holidays:

  • Easter: 17 April;
  • Easter Monday: 18 April;
  • Blood and Body of Christ Day: 16 June.

Holidays in Poland for school children 2022-2023

  • Summer holidays 2022: 24 June to 1 September;
  • Christmas and New Year holidays: 23 December 2022 to 1 January 2023;
  • Easter Holidays: 6 to 11 April;
  • Summer holidays 2023: 23 June to 4 September.

Winter holidays in Polish schools 2023:

  • 16-29 January: Lubelskie, Łódzkie, Podkarpackie, Pomorskie, Silesian (Schląskie) voivodeships.
  • From 23 January to 5 February: Warmińsko-Mazurskie, Podlaskie Voivodeship.
  • From 30 January to 12 February: Wielkopolskie, Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Lubuszkie, Małopolskie, Świętokrzyskie.
  • 13-26 February: West Pomeranian (Zachodniopomorskie), Lower Silesian (Dolnośląskie), Mazowieckie, Opolskie voivodeships.

School holidays in Poland 2023-2024

In the year 2023, September 1st falls on a Friday. The school holidays in Polish schools should end on 31 August (Thursday), but some institutions may extend them to 3 September (Sunday). This is because schools do not have classes on the first day of school and hold a rally. It, therefore, makes sense to postpone it until 4 September.

  • Summer holiday 2023: from 23 June to 4 September;
  • Christmas and New Year holidays: 23 December 2023 to 1 January 2024;
  • Easter Holidays: 28 March to 2 April;
  • Summer holidays 2024: from 21 June.

Winter holidays for Polish schoolchildren 2024:

  • 17-30 January: West Pomeranian (Zachodniopomorskie), Lower Silesian (Dolnośląskie), Mazowieckie, Opolskie voivodeships.
  • From 22 January to 4 February: Warmińsko-Mazurskie, Podlaskie voivodeships.
  • From 29 January to 11 February: Lubelskie, Łódzkie, Podkarpackie, Pomorskie, Silesian (Schląskie) voivodeships.
  • 12-25 February: Wielkopolskie, Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Lubuszkie, Małopolskie, Świętokrzyskie.

Floating weekends:

  • Easter: 31 March;
  • Easter Monday: 1 February;
  • Blood and Body of Christ Day: 30 May.
