Northern, central and southern regions of the Netherlands

In this article, School-Holidays.Info will tell you about the school holidays in the Netherlands (Holland) for the years 2022, 2023, and 2024. Here is a list of the regions in the country (North, Central, and South). We will indicate the start and end dates of spring, summer, autumn, winter (New Year or Christmas) holidays.

What types of holidays are there in the Netherlands?

Holidays in the Netherlands are divided into four terms. In the fourth quarter, there is a May holiday – an extra week or two of rest for students in Dutch schools. What are the school holidays in the Netherlands?

  1. Summer holidays;
  2. Autumn holidays;
  3. Christmas holidays (winter holidays, New Year holidays)
  4. Spring break;
  5. May holidays.

Below we give the dates for the beginning and end of all holidays from 2022 to 2024 inclusive. The Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science sets these dates so that the first day of the holiday is a Saturday and the last day is a Sunday.

Important

The start and end dates for summer, autumn, Christmas, and spring holidays in the Netherlands are subject to change by the school administration. Check in the school handbook or on the school’s website. Some schools will extend the May holidays by one week.

Regions of the Netherlands

School holidays in the Netherlands begin and end at different times depending on the region. This is done to avoid strain on the transport system and infrastructure. The whole country is divided into three regions: North, Central, and South.

Northern, central and southern regions of the Netherlands

The division of the Netherlands into regions is quite complex. Municipalities and even villages in one province can belong to different regions. Therefore, it’s worth taking a closer look at the lists below to find out when holidays are in Holland. In them, we have indicated the composition of the northern region, the central region, and the southern region.

Northern region (Northern Netherlands)

  1. Groningen.
  2. Drenthe.
  3. Overijssel.
  4. North Holland.
  5. Flevoland (all municipalities except Zewolde).
  6. Friesland.
  7. The municipality of Emnes and the former municipality of Abkaude in Utrecht.
  8. The municipality of Hattem in Gelderland.

Central region (Central Netherlands)

  1. Gelderland (in part, see below).
  2. Utrecht (except for the municipality of Emnes and the former municipality of Abkaude).
  3. South Holland.
  4. The municipality of Altena in North Brabant (except Hank and Dussen).
  5. The municipality of Zewolde in Flevoland.

The province of Gelderland is partly part of the central region. It includes:

  • Aalten, Apeldoorn, Aude Eisselstrick.
  • Barneveld, Berkeland, Bronckhorst, Brummen, Bühren.
  • Culemborg.
  • Dutingham.
  • East Gelre, Ede, Elburg, Epe, Ermelo.
  • Harderwijk, Herde.
  • Locham.
  • Monferland (except the former municipality of Didam).
  • Neder Betuwe (except the former municipality of Dodewaard), Nijkerk, Nynspeth.
  • Oldebruk.
  • Putten.
  • Scherpenzell.
  • Thiel.
  • Vorst.
  • Wageningen, West Bethuwe, Winterswijk.
  • Zutphen.

Southern region (Southern Netherlands)

  1. Gelderland (in part, see below).
  2. Zealand.
  3. Limburg
  4. Northern Brabant (excluding Woodriham, Slewijk, Nieuwendijk and Werkendam in the municipality of Altena).

The following areas of the Province of Gelderland belong to the Southern Region of the Netherlands:

  • Arnhem.
  • Boenningen, Berg en Dal.
  • Druten, Duiven, Dusburg.
  • Heumann.
  • Lingewaard.
  • Maasdriel, Monferland (former municipality of Didam only).
  • Neder Betuwe (only the former municipality of Dodewaard), Nijmegen.
  • Overbetuwe.
  • Reden, Reinvaarden, Renkum, Rosendaal.
  • Weichen, Westervoort, West Maas and Waal.
  • Zaltbommel, Zevenaar.
