What are the holidays in Germany?

In Germany, there is only one federal holiday: German Unity Day. All other holidays are determined separately by the federal states. There are nine public holidays that are celebrated on the same day in each state, but they are not anchored at the federal level.

In addition to public holidays, there are national holidays. They are celebrated in individual states, cities, municipalities, and even regions. There are 11 national holidays. On these days, like public holidays, most of the population has a day off from work, and schools are closed.

In addition to the above, Germany has a multitude of local holidays and festivals that are not official public holidays for all Germans. Perhaps the most famous of these is Oktoberfest. It is the world’s largest beer festival, which takes place annually in Munich for 16 days, starting on the last Saturday in September and ending on the first Sunday in October. In Munich, the first day of Oktoberfest is declared an official holiday, and many workplaces and schools are closed on this day. Additionally, some companies and organizations may declare additional days off during the festival for their employees.
